Kyurem-White Duo Guide

Overview

Kyurem-White is the definition of "wasted potential". It has massive base stats, with Base 310 Attack eclipsing that of Mewtwo's. In its own right, it is a very powerful Dragon-type attacker, being 'only' as good as Rayquaza. The real thing that kills Kyurem-White's viability as an attacker is the existence of Kyurem-Black, who has the same monstrous base stats, but didn't get gimped with a sub-optimal Dragon-type moveset. While Kyurem-White is only as good as Rayquaza, Kyurem-Black solidly surpasses Rayquaza, having around 10% more DPS and around 30% more bulk. Thus, there's not much reason to use Kyurem Candies on Kyurem-White, when Kyurem-Black exists.

That said, Kyurem Candies are Kyurem Candies, and it's worth raiding Kyurem-White just to amass Kyurem Candies for Kyurem-Black.

The trio is quite easy; almost every Dragon-, Fighting-, Rock-, Fairy-, or Steel-type on this list, powered up to around Level 30, will be able to pull off the trio.

The duo is much harder, but it is still achievable within reason (unlike, say, the unboosted Zekrom duo).

Ancient Power
  • Dragon Breath is boosted by STAB and hits Dragons for super effective damage, making it generally harder than Steel Wing to go against.
  • Blizzard is boosted by STAB and hits many Dragons for 4x super effective damage. If your Dragon is weak to Ice and gets hit by a Kyurem Blizzard, it will die, making this the hardest Kyurem moveset to face without dodging.
    • Dragons that are weak to Ice are non-viable against Blizzard if you do not dodge.
  • Dragon Pulse is boosted by STAB, comes out frequently, and hits Dragons for super effective damage, making it the 2nd-hardest Charge Move to go against.
    • Rayquaza is non-viable against Dragon Pulse if you do not dodge.
  • Focus Blast hits Dialga and Rampardos hard; however, it is also resisted by the flying Dragons, making it the easiest moveset to face if you're using primarily Rayquaza, Salamence, or Dragonite.
  • Ancient Power hits the flying Dragons for super effective damage; however, its Base Power is low. For Metagross, Ancient Power will be the easiet moveset to face.

Weather
  • Windy boosts the power of your Dragon-type attacks. If you're using Dragon-types, Windy makes duoing Kyurem much easier, unless you're against Dragon Pulse.
    • Rayquaza and Salamence are non-viable against Dragon Pulse in wind, unless you can dodge.
  • Partly Cloudy boosts the power of your Rock-type attacks.
    • While Rampardos can already duo all movesets with dodging, Partly Cloudy allows Level 40 Tyranitar and Rhyperior to become capable of duoing all movesets (with dodging) as well.
  • Cloudy boosts the power of your Fairy- and Fighting-type attacks.
    • With Cloudy, Level 40 Gardevoir becomes capable of duoing against every moveset except Steel Wing/Blizzard; with dodging, it can duo Steel Wing/Blizzard as well.
    • Level 40 Togekiss can duo against every moveset, except Blizzard and Ancient Power, with a Cloudy boost.
    • Level 40 Machamp and Hariyama can duo against every moveset under Cloudy weather.
    • With dodging, Level 40 Breloom can duo against every moveset under Cloudy weather.
  • Snow boosts the power of your Steel-type attacks, making the duo drastically easier if you're using primarily Metagross.
    • With Snow, Level 40 Jirachi becomes capable of duoing against every moveset.
    • Under Snow, Level 40 Metal Claw/Iron Head Dialga and Excadrill can duo against every moveset, but dodging is required against Focus Blast.

Viable Counters

Minimum viable levels assume Best Friends, no Weather, no Dodging.

Level 40 Machamp, Latios, and Outrage Salamence are alternatives that are too weak to consistently duo on their own, but can be slotted in if you have enough high-level Meteor Mash Metagross carrying.

Level 40 Rampardos is viable against Steel Wing/Ancient Power, but not Dragon Breath/Ancient Power.

Metagross is king against all Kyurem movesets; the more Metagross you have, the more you can afford to slot in one of the above 3 Pokemon without jeopardizing your chances of winning.

Note that Metagross must have Meteor Mash; without Meteor Mash, Metagross is non-viable for the duo, even at Level 40.

vs. Focus Blast

Level 40 Latios is slightly too weak to duo against Focus Blast by itself; if you have enough high-level Metagross to make up for the time difference, you can afford to slot in one or two Latios.

If you can consistently dodge Focus Blasts, Level 40 Dialga is duo-viable on its own. Level 40 Rampardos and Latios are slightly short of being duo-viable, but can be part of a winning composition if there are sufficient high-level Metagross to get you ahead of the timer.

vs. Dragon Pulse - No Dodging

With no Dodging, Level 40 Rampardos is duo-viable against Dragon Breath/Dragon Pulse, but it is slightly short of being duo-viable against Steel Wing/Dragon Pulse.

Dodging significantly improves the performance of Dragons against Dragon Pulse; Rayquaza, for example, will faint 42 times (21 times per trainer), which would require 3 relobbies per trainer. With dodging, Rayquaza will only faint 19 times (9 per trainer), which is only 1 relobby per trainer.

vs. Blizzard - No Dodging

Metagross
Min. Level: 35
Bullet Punch
Meteor Mash
Palkia
Min. Level: 40

Draco Meteor

If you don't dodge Blizzard, Metagross is the only Pokemon that is capable of comfortably duoing; even Palkia's performance is shaky vs. Blizzard.

If you can consistently dodge all Blizzards, Level 40 Rayquaza, Garchomp, and Outrage Salamence are alternative picks that are slightly too weak to be duo-viable; with enough Metagross, you may be able to slot in those Dragons and still win against Blizzard.

Keep in mind that you must dodge Blizzards with the Dragons, or they will get oneshot and essentially be deadweight.
